Freedressing Campaign

Promoting awareness for gender nonconforming people since 2012.

Freedressing, a term first attested by LGBTQ activist Leslie Krause in 2004, is a rallying call for genderqueer and gender nonconforming people who advocate for freedom of gender expression, in defiance of binary gender stereotypes. Through education and awareness, we hope to curb prejudice, bullying, and hate crimes toward genderqueer and gender nonconforming people.

In contrast to crossdressing, which invokes a gender binary mode of expression, freedressing seeks to liberate gender nonconforming and genderqueer people from socially imposed conventions of masculinity and femininity.

Terminology

gender creative (n) - a person whose conception of their gender intrinsically differs from the prevailing cultural ideals of masculinity and femininity (attested by Dr. Diane Ehrensaft)

freedressing (adj) - appearance, behaviors, mannerisms, or language associated with gender-neutral presentation; values and principles consistent with fashion freedom (attested by Leslie Krause, 2004)

ambiphobia (n) - irrational fear or hatred of gender nonconforming people, typically motivated by attitudes of cissexism; intolerance or discrimination enacted toward people on the basis of non-normative gender presentation (attested by Leslie Krause, 2015)
